Book Review: New Moon by Stephenie Meyer
I would like to start off by stating that the Twilight Saga was the first book series that I ever read after Diary of a Wimpy Kid (yeah, I know, what a shocker!). I read New Moon for the first time when I was 13 years-old. I read it again when I was around 15 years-old. Now that I'm almost 19 (it took me a few months to finish this review, so your girl is 19 now!), I decided that I needed to reread it so that I could compare my thoughts on the plot, writing style, and characters.
First, the plot is f*cking stupid and dumb. I do not understand the reason why Edward would leave Bella when he clearly is head over heels for her - I mean he would sneak through her bedroom window to watch her sleep, and let me add that he would put oil on the window so it wouldn't make any noise. I know, what a creep! The point is, it seems like Meyer didn't know where the story should lead to (in fact, she hadn't even planned on writing a sequel, so I guess it makes some sense). Also, I want to point out that there are a lot of comments that made me extremely uncomfortable. For example, when Jake's friends meet up with them, they talk about Jacob fixing the bikes; Meyer wrote, "Many of the words they used were unfamiliar to me, and I figured I'd have to have a Y chromosome to really understand the excitement." Bella's thought regarding mechanical work is sexist. She believes that because she is a female, she can't understand or, at least, enjoy it. I hate the way Bella takes advantage of Jacob's friendship. He is genuinely a nice person, and you can totally see that he really likes her. However, Bella decides that she doesn't care that she's toying with his feelings as long as she can forget about her pain for a few hours. The only reason I was able to get through this book, again, was because of Jake. Honestly, he is so charismatic and I had an amazing time reading about him without having to rush so I could get to Edward coming back. Alice never disappoints me, she will always be my favorite Twilight character, along with Charlie because they're both extremely funny and caring. Anyways, I'm going to end this by stating that at the end of the day I'm still TEAM EDWARD because who can say no to a sexy, sparkly vampire? I gave this book 3.5/5 stars on March 15, 2019 on Goodreads.
